Malleable Type and Image
Manipulation of typographic and pictorial aspects together seamlessly: Type and Image class
For these pieces, I was tasked with creating a pliable combination of type and image from an object that was chosen for me, which in this instance was a typewriter. After many different iterations ascertained throughout the creative process, I had decided to create one that was based around the idea of what a typewriter’s primary function is (writing/distributing words) and another that focused on the metaphorical application of creation that comes from developing something through a typewriter (stories/painted imagery). The first one took the ladder example into question, showing an image coming out of the paper printed, melting off of it akin to ink, showcasing the malleability and easily flowing nature of the typewriter’s application. it is reaching outward towards the audience in order to draw one’s attention to the typewriter and inform one of not just the image on display, but also the accompanying word. It also exists to represent forward progression and the development of technological advancement that was perpetuated through the invention (this is further illustrated through the illustration on the paper being a cityscape). For the second one, it involves the object being made out of the very words that it produces, simulating a sense of irony and representational valor. The words in question are the basic latin text that appears when someone begins to type, emblematic of the beginning of a typographic movement that would revolutionize society. The design itself is in black and white not only to highlight the red words of ‘Language is Life’ present on some of the keys, but also to add a dramatic, grandiose feel to the piece to highlight the importance on an emotional scale. I hope that when viewing these pieces, once can gain an overall sense of the importance of the device, and how it can develop some amazing elements of type and image as a result.
