Typographic Activist Mailer
Activist letter to be mailed: Typography class
For this piece, I was tasked with creating a promotional mailer detailing a brief history of around a graphic designer. In this instance, the person in question that I was assigned is Mark Randall, a designer who has a known for creating pieces that deal with issues of diversity, including minority representation and economic depravity. To highlight this, I decided to have my design work off of the idea of bold change, a simple center that is prevalent through the muddle outside, hence the title of ‘Tearing through Intolerance.’ The design of a piece of paper being ripped through elevates this idea by having it flow from the beginning of the mailer to the end, with it also acting as an ironic paper motif, being as easily destroyed as it is to create on its surface. The color scheme follows a predominantly blue tone in order to make the accented red popped out, and the typeface chosen heightens the bold visibility through readability within the more compressed marginal area. I hope that when viewing my piece, one can get a greater sense of exactly how the designer in question chooses to portray a message through his designs, and subsequently feels inspired/motivated through a powerful aesthetic representation of change.
